Test Procedure: Ultra-fine #0000 steel wool reciprocates on the hard coating surface under a 1kg load. Panels pass the test if no visible scratches after specified cycles (3,000 / 5,000 cycles as common specs).
This test focuses on point-to-point scratch resistance, measuring the coating’s ability to withstand sharp, linear abrasion from everyday contact.

The critical judging metric is haze shift after abrasion, which quantifies loss of light transmittance and surface fogging caused by prolonged rolling wear. This test simulates cumulative long-term surface abrasion in continuous-use scenarios.
2. No Absolute “Harder” Result Between the Two Tests
Many clients equate abrasion resistance to surface hardness, yet the two metrics differ fundamentally:
Hardness measures resistance to indentation (verified via pencil hardness tests).
Abrasion resistance describes tolerance to continuous frictional loss, which correlates with hardness but cannot be directly converted.
The two tests evaluate abrasion from completely different angles:
Steel wool test: Cutting-type filament friction, testing surface scratch toughness.

Cost-wise, Taber-certified hard coating incurs far higher production costs than steel wool-only hard coating.
